TRAY'S STORY

FOUNDER

I would like to take a moment to share a part of my life story that has significantly influenced the person I am today. At the tender age of 5, I entered the foster care system, marking the beginning of a challenging yet transformative journey filled with uncertainties and resilience.

Transitioning from one foster home to another meant constantly adapting to new environments, faces, and routines. The frequent changes in schools added another layer of complexity to my already turbulent life. Birthdays and holidays often passed by quietly, leaving me with a deep sense of longing and isolation. Simple pleasures like visiting amusement parks or shopping for school clothes felt like unattainable luxuries. Growing up in foster care presented tough and solitary moments, but I discovered solace and purpose through sports. Sports became my sanctuary, steering me away from troubles and the perils of the streets. The discipline, camaraderie, and sense of achievement that sports offered were invaluable in helping me navigate the obstacles of my youth.

Upon reaching 18, I aged out of the foster care system, finding myself fending for myself. Despite the daunting challenges I faced, I was fortunate enough to continue playing basketball at a junior college, eventually earning a scholarship to a university. This opportunity ushered in a brighter future brimming with possibilities and avenues for success. My personal journey fueled the establishment of "WE UP NEXT," a non-profit organization committed to aiding teenagers within the foster care system. Amid the adversities of the Covid-19 pandemic, I seized the chance to launch this initiative utilizing the resources within my reach. With the unwavering support of the community, I am dedicated to offering guidance, mentorship, and resources that empower foster care teens to overcome obstacles and realize their full potential.

Through "WE UP NEXT," my aim is to serve as a beacon of hope and support for teenagers who often feel invisible and unheard in society. The transition from foster care to collegiate athlete has instilled in me a profound sense of purpose to uplift and advocate for those encountering similar struggles. Grateful for the opportunities that have crossed my path, I am resolute in my commitment to pay it forward by making a positive impact in the lives of others
